What's love got to do with it?

“What’s love got to do with it, got to do with it?

What’s love but a second-hand emotion?

What’s love got to do with it, got to do with it?

Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?”

These are the words to Tina Turner’s song.

What does love have to do with it? Why is it so important to us? And why is it so important to be motivated by love?

Love has been the essential element of the hope and joy I experience in my life. This love is not romantic, but something I know deep within. It has always been with me, although it felt distant as a child.

In my 20s when my world fell apart and I could see no hope, it was the faint light to which I looked. And as I did this, it became brighter and clearer, illuminating my way forward. It gave me confidence that despite the trauma I had experienced, my future did not have to be a broken record of my past.

Love gave me the confidence to push forward no matter what I was going through, giving me the clarity to make small steps out of the depression I had experienced since childhood. Despite my slow progress through weight loss, love gave me the hope that one day I would be free from the guilt and shame I felt about myself.

I had searched for the illusion of being thin, and instead discovered acceptance for who I was in the present and whatever I would be in the future.  Now I know what I was seeking was not to be thin, but to be happy in myself no matter how I looked.

Isn’t this the real goal, to find happiness with who we are? In the end, my belief in love has given me more than I could have expected. Love is like that; it always sees the good in us and others and gives hope in times of despair.
