Simple and easy ways to improve your health

Simple changes to my diet and lifestyle over time have greatly improved my health and wellbeing. Slowly and gently making these changes has helped me maintain them long term.

Below are some simple and easy ways to improve your health. More information can be found at healthdirect.gov.au.

Brush your teeth well twice a day for at least two minutes and floss at least once a day.

Not only will this prevent tooth decay, but it also removes bugs which are harmful to your health, preventing gum disease and mouth cancer. Unhealthy bugs in our mouth can cause inflammation in our body which has a negative impact on our health. Poor mouth hygiene has been linked to rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Eat whole foods such as fruit and vegetables and vary the colour of the food you eat over the week.

Whole foods are foods which are close to their natural form. They are not stripped of their nutrients like processed foods. Foods can be broken into the following colours: red, blue/purple, orange, green and white/brown. Each colour represents a different phytochemical which supports a healthy body by preventing cell damage and cancers, formation of cataracts, and supporting the prevention of viruses and bacteria.

Drink plenty of water

Generally, men should drink 10 cups of water and women 8 cups of water daily. Water aids in digestion, absorption of nutrients, waste elimination, regulation of body temperature and movement. Dehydration can result in reduction in mental and physical performance, the development of kidney stones, some cancers, and issues with heart valves. It is also helpful for mouth health.

Avoid processed food as much as possible.

Processed foods include jams, lollies, cakes, sugary drinks, bakery food, fast food, and potato chips. It is stripped of its nutritional value, leaving us hungry and lacking in energy. Processed food is addictive, high in kilojoules and contains added sugar, salt and fat which can lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

These simple changes can make a real difference to your health. They have certainly improved my health.
